Qalibaf Against the Purification Camp: The Speaker's Two-Front Defense of Negotiation and the Majlis
In twelve days, Majlis Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf has publicly contested the hardline camp on two fronts: the legitimacy of negotiating with Washington, and the independence of parliament from both the government and the intelligence services. An open letter answering Kayhan's Hossein Shariatmadari, a short video arguing that negotiation is a tool of struggle rather than surrender, and a televised rebuke of a Paydari-aligned deputy during the 6 September debate on the foreign-infiltration bill were all confrontations he chose. His method is to claim the revolutionary vocabulary for the negotiating camp. The fight is now inside the conservative establishment, over who sets the terms on which the campaign against the United States continues, and the Leader has not yet weighed in.
